The body of a former lieutenant of a powerful Mexican drug cartel was found wrapped in garbage bags at a Jalisco park bench in Guadalajara on Thursday, March 18. Mexican authorities believe the corpse is that of Carlos “El Cholo” Enrique Sanchez, a former member of the Jalisco New General cartel.
According to the New York Post, the body has not been officially identified but comes after a video posted online showed a handcuffed man sitting in front of armed men from the Jalisco cartel; the video claimed the man was El Cholo and that he cooperated with the police.

Who is Carlos “El Cholo” Enrique Sanchez?
Sanchez's body, which was dumped in Jardín Hidalgo, a public square in the center of Tlaquepaque, part of the Guadalajara metropolitan area, was found with two signs that were pinned to it using knives. One of them read 'The traitor El Cholo', according to Mexico News Daily. Sanchez split up the group in 2017 to form his own gang - the Nuevo Plaza Cartel. The paper also added the two gangs have been constantly at war over methamphetamine trafficking control in Guadalajara.
"This material confirms the existence of an orchestrated strategy to destabilize the state by an organized crime group," Jalisco Attorney General Gerardo Octavio Solis Gomez said. "Everything indicates that it’s… Carlos Sanchez Martinez, nicknamed ‘El Cholo.'"
Solis also added the video could be used as proof for the crimes to which Sánchez confessed. The attorney general said that some of the characteristics of the body found matched those of Sánchez but stressed the corpse had not been formally identified.

Nathaniel Janowitz of Vice wrote in his report: "An obviously distraught Sánchez looks to the side of the camera apparently reading off a number of talking points, as he takes the blame for numerous recent violent incidents in Guadalajara and lists the names of several top police officers whom he claims he worked within an effort to collaborate alongside the government to eliminate CJNG, not just in Jalisco, but in other parts of Mexico as well."
According to the Vice report, the clip also saw Sanchez claiming to be working specifically with Omar García Harfuch, a controversial top cop in Mexico City. Harfuch survived after being hit by several bullets during an early morning ambush by alleged CJNG gunmen in Mexico City in June last year. He also said he had the backing of two of Guadalajara's top cops - J. de Jesús De Anda Zambrano and Mario Alberto Martínez González. Both high-ranking officers were relieved of their duties later that same day, according to the city authorities.
