MTVs Undressed

June 2024 · 6 minute read

Does anybody else remember this show? It came out in the late ‘90s/early ‘00s.

I used to get sucked into the marathons MYV would air. There was usually a gay storyline alongside the straight ones. It was fluff but entertaining and sometimes hot

Super cute boys were on that show when I was a kid.

This show is great. It's tacky, campy and hilarious. It doesn't take itself seriously. I love how casual and shame-free they portrayed sexuality. I feel like honestly this couldn't be made today because I feel we're even more prudish about sex and have to attach labels and over-analyze such a natural and instinctual activity.

I see Bryce Johnson, did Mr. Murphy have something to do with this show, it seems right up his alley?

I loved Undressed! .. Used to watch it late at night in tandem with MTV's guilty pleasure, soap opera "Spyder Games."

btw - Two years ago Deadline reported that "Undressed" was being rebooted. Don't know what happened

DL fave Pedro Pascal played a gay BFF in a couple of episodes.

The show was surprisingly "explicit" for a teens' 90s show as in, like, hinting at a gay blow job going on out of frame in one episode.

A shame the show may never get a DVD / Blu-Ray box set release because of music rights. Which is insane in itself since it was an MTV show and you'd think they'd manage to secure the rights for that at least for an early DVD release in the late 90s or early aughts.

R6 its like Daria and Beavis and Butt-head basically which got all the music stripped for DVD releases. Which is frustrating because music played a big role in both of those shows. I think Undressed has the issue of not only the music copyright but also having over 200 episodes and not being as mainstream and high demand as the only two were. Luckily a big chunk of the episodes are on YouTube despite the shitty vhs quality.

Today I noticed most MTV shows use indie music soundtracks instead of big mainstream ones to get around this issue.

I hooked up with a guy from undressed, that I had years before seen on undressed and thought was super hot. A real full circle moment.

by Anonymousreply 8January 20, 2021 7:26 PM

I find the guys in 90s and 2000s shows much hotter. Saved by the Bell, 90210, Boy Meets World, Melrose Place, Undressed, California Dreams, Buffy, Undressed, The OC, One Tree Hill, 7th Heaven, Angel, etc. Less polished, manufactured and roided up with more naturally athletic bodies and cuter faces.

Back in my acting days, I was on that show. No, I am not telling you who I played.

Undressed seemed to be the first acting gigs for many future Hollywood stars. Just look at the list of actors that appeared in it from this Wiki article.

I probably masturbated to every episode growing up.

by Anonymousreply 12January 20, 2021 9:30 PM

R10 were you also in a horror movie that was part of a series? maybe it's you I mentioned in my previous comment

by Anonymousreply 13January 20, 2021 9:42 PM

So R12 masturbated to R10, then?

by Anonymousreply 14January 20, 2021 10:12 PM

This show kind of reminds me of later Gregg Araki movies where everyone is casually slutty, the dialogue is intentionally awful, plots intentionally dumb or crazy and homosexuality/bisexuality isn't a big deal. The drama mostly comes from the characters being stupid or dishonest. Of course no aliens or monsters though in Undressed.

You could count on someone being shirtless & wet or shirtless and covered in sweat at least once an episode.

That's why it came in late at night. If you had parents that didn't care and let you stay up then you could catch it or if you were old enough to watch what you wanted.

I remember watching it as a closeted college student in a provincial Southern town. It was probably the only show on television at the time that portrayed gay men being explicitly sexual.

by Anonymousreply 17January 24, 2021 7:55 PM

From the Real World to Undressed, I fully believe MTV's matter-of-factness about homosexuality was a big driving force in gay acceptance amongst Gen X and the Millenials.

It was no more than a trashy soap with cute guys, but god the fact that no one apologized for being gay was refreshing.

by Anonymousreply 18January 24, 2021 7:57 PM

The straight guy is cute... but he must have terrible body odor... he's constantly checking and putting on deodorant.

by Anonymousreply 19January 24, 2021 8:02 PM

Was it an MTV show, where a bunch of supposedly gay guys shared a house and the lucky winner got to choose his boyfriend, who turned out to be straight? And then his fag-hag girlfriend threw a big fit? I thought that's what this was, but I'm obviously wrong.

by Anonymousreply 20January 24, 2021 8:48 PM

Boy Meets Boy. That was on Bravo.

And it's BULLSHIT!

by Anonymousreply 21January 24, 2021 8:50 PM

MTV had a lot of dating shows in the 2000s like NEXT, Parental Control, Date My Mom and Room Raiders. All of these shows had gay themed episodes. Though because they were clearly scripted they did have the gay guys act more on the stereotypical flaming and bitchy side. But still representation nevertheless.

There was a femme lesbian character in Daria who had a crush on Jane and Jane didn't reciprocate but iirc didn't treat it like a huge deal more just not attracted to her.

by Anonymousreply 22January 24, 2021 8:57 PM

The gay twins episode and the one where a gay brother and his sister were both dating/having sex with a bi guy were awful. And I loved them!

by Anonymousreply 25January 24, 2021 9:14 PM

R13, no. My acting "career" (like two parts) didn't consist of any horror. Though a few casting directors might tell otherwise...

by Anonymousreply 26January 24, 2021 10:54 PM

This show was my masturbation fuel in junior high.

by Anonymousreply 27January 25, 2021 7:07 AM

It was an ok show, i only watched because to the gay scenes, otherwise it seemed fairly low budget.

by Anonymousreply 28January 25, 2021 7:15 AM

This was always my favorite, because I have a crush on twins Chris and Brad Goddard. The third one isn't bad, either.

I never heard of this. Of course, I didn't have cable at the time. It plays like an edited porn video.
