Maybe she shouldn’t have accepted the role…
To be fair she looked 10 years older than she was in it.

Then perhaps they should have cast an older woman as Dr. Sattler, given a 23 year old would not be a world expert in paleo-botany.
Way to take roles from older actresses, Laur.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | May 22, 2022 2:33 PM |
This bastard has one of the least deserved Oscars of the last 40 years, she looks like a foot and is very lucky to have the career she has.
What's with these overpriveleged actresses having to complain about EVERYTHING?!
by Anonymous | reply 3 | May 22, 2022 2:35 PM |
I thought she was in her 30s when I saw it as a kid.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | May 22, 2022 2:36 PM |
Laura Dern (b. February 1967) was 25 when JURASSIC PARK was filmed in August-November 1992; 26 when it was released in June 1993.

Has anybody read the article? It doesn't reflect that absurd headline at all. She and Neill are both interviewed and are laughing throughout; she even mentions how appropriate and natural it felt for her character to fall in love with his, and even jokes about being surprised that they weren't the same age. She expresses no outrage at all.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | May 22, 2022 2:40 PM |
It’s paywalled R9, so I could only see the headline and first paragraph 🤷🏼♂️
by Anonymous | reply 11 | May 22, 2022 2:45 PM |
R9 is right. It's clickbait designed to enrage people and doesn't reflect the reality of the conversation. Based on these first few responses, it seems to have worked.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | May 22, 2022 2:47 PM |
R11 Here are the age-related bits; hopefully it pastes somewhat legibly.
Why, I ask Dern and Neill, did Spielberg want you two? “Let me talk for Laura, because this is what men do in the patriarchy,” Neill says. He cackles. “Laura was a tender age. I’m guessing . . . 23?” “Yep,” Dern says, smiling. “And she was already an exciting actor — she had done David Lynch films. It was no surprise she was asked. But I was completely baffled to be called by Steven. I didn’t get it.”
Yet there was something off that neither realised at the time. “I am 20 years older than Laura!” Neill blurts out. Dern laughs. “Which at the time was a completely appropriate age difference for a leading man and lady! It never occurred to me until I opened a magazine and there was an article called ‘Old geezers and gals’. People like Harrison Ford and Sean Connery acting with much younger people.” In Six Days, Seven Nights, Ford, then 55, starred opposite Anne Heche, 29; and in Entrapment there was a 39-year age gap between Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones. “And there I was, on the list. I thought, ‘Come on. It can’t be true.’ ”
Dern takes over: “Well, it felt completely appropriate to fall in love with Sam Neill. And it was only now, when we returned in a moment of cultural awareness about the patriarchy, that I was, like, ‘Wow! We’re not the same age?’”
“But an audience 30 years later wouldn’t find that pace acceptable,” Neill says with a sigh. “As a result this has action from the moment the lights go down. Though of course it has quiet moments.” “It’s very romantic,” Dern interrupts teasingly. “So romantic, my darling,” Neill says. I wonder if I should leave the Zoom.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | May 22, 2022 2:48 PM |
Who cares? She still expressed the age difference was inappropriate. Stop replying to yourself. Weird fuck.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | May 22, 2022 2:54 PM |
Never understood this complaint about age gaps between characters in movies. (And by reading the paragraphs posted by R13, it doesn't seem like Dern or Neill are making much about it.) Not sure if people are talking about the characters or the ages of the actors themselves in some cases, but big age gaps between partners occur in real life so why not on the screen? And, it needs to be said - it's Sam Neill! Who wouldn't want to be partnered with him?!?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | May 22, 2022 2:58 PM |
They wanted Laura Linney, but some ditzy secretary typed the wrong name on the contract, so they just went with it.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 22, 2022 3:02 PM |
It is fucking weird. Hollywood thought that no one would pay money to see a leading lady over 35? But they were ok with leading men 50, 60-plus. It was always gross. Only now it's OK to say it without being labeled a "feminazi".

Spielberg's goddaughter, Gwyneth Paltrow, who had just turned 20 at the time of filming, also read for 'Ellie.' 😮
I think Helen Hunt, who was 29, would have made a good 'Ellie.'

Most young actress are like bitch please. Sam o Neill is still a very handsome man and I am much younger than him. I would not mind been paired with him so not inappropriate on my book.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | May 22, 2022 3:14 PM |
Wait a minute, if she was in her mid-20s in Jurassic Park, just how old was she in The Fabulous Stains - seven?!
by Anonymous | reply 20 | May 22, 2022 3:17 PM |
I was just a kid - but she seemed way older than mid-20s. She looked/acted older than my mom…
by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 22, 2022 3:22 PM |
Laura only got the role because Juliette Binoche kept turning them down. They kept offering Juliette more and more money but she didn't want to do American schlock but 30 years later she did Godzilla.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 22, 2022 3:22 PM |
Is this one of those clickbait things where they blow up a single comment and turn it into controversy? Laura Dern is great and I’m sure she loves Sam Neill. It’s worth noting how many older men in film and television always get young women but never the reverse. She has the right to comment on that. How many fat slobs in television have hot wives? C’mon now.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | May 22, 2022 3:22 PM |
In the book, Ellie is 24. I remember because I was a student at the time and was impressed a 24 post grad was specialized enough to take part in that project.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 22, 2022 3:23 PM |
R17 has it. I’m not some radical feminist, men are evil, Andrea Dworkin far Left idiot, but even I can see how ridiculous Hollywood has been in the past towards actresses.

Hm, there may have been an implied history between them - I’d have to rewatch after many years - but Jurassic Park was certainly no romance. Their characters were split up on different parts of the island for most of the film, if I remember correctly…

R22 Gary talked me out of it.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | May 22, 2022 4:20 PM |
r20 she was 14 and then 15 during the final MTV video scene. She'd hit a growth spurt and was several inches taller in the video than she had been in the film.
She was legally emancipated from her parents in 1983 at the age of 16, and I don't think she would have been legally allowed to do that if she was only 14 at the time, which would have been her age had she really only been 23 in Jurassic Park. She was 25. I don't know why she's trying to shave two years off her age now, there are too many articles about her birth and childhood.

The most distracting age gap I've seen in a film was in Yes Man, starring 28-year-old Zooey Deschanel as 46-year-old Jim Carrey's love interest.

How dare she look like an old woman age 20 and Sam Neil look younger than her when he was double her age is her real issue. She’s a FUG who gets jobs thru her famous parents hard work. Weird teeth , homely face, gangly, me too warrior as if anyones harassing that thing.

by Anonymous | reply 45 | May 23, 2022 11:37 AM |
I really don't like this current trend of movie stars complaining about films they did many years ago. Unless they experienced actual harrassment on set, they chose to do the film and if they regret it now, they should keep their mouths shut about it. It comes across as so incredibly spoiled, entitled and petty and it's an insult to the many people who worked on those films and got none of the recognition.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | May 23, 2022 11:41 AM |
She didn't complain, she and Sam Neill were laughing about it, but it's being put out there like a complaint just to hook people and make them mad.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | May 23, 2022 11:42 AM |

I was shocked when I found out she was in her early 20’s in Jurassic Park. I thought she looked like she was in her late 30’s/early 40’s.

It was Neill who said the number 23. She just did that "yeah" thing to not be the rude ass who goes "Well, actually, Sam, it was 25...but go on." Twenty three was close enough that she wasn't going to correct him, look like a jerk, and stall the flow of the conversation.
