by Anonymous | reply 4 | December 21, 2020 10:26 PM |
This is from one of his comedy routines. He talks about his father, Leonard Bernstein, and Gay.
My dad's a very weird, informal guy. A lot of people ask me if he gave me a sex talk. Yes. I think. I was like 12 years old and my dad walked up to me and he said, “Hello… Hello, I'm Chip Mulaney. I’m your father.” And then he said the following, “You know, Leonard Bernstein was one of the great composers and conductors of the 20th century, but sometimes he would be gay. And according to a biography I read of him, when he was holding back the gay part, he did some of his best work.”
Now we don't have time to unpack all of that. And I don't know if he was discouraging me from being gay or encouraging me to be a classical composer. But that is how he thought to phrase it to a 12-year-old boy. How would that ever work? Like years later, I'd be in college about to go down on some rocking twink and I'd be like, “Wait a second. What would Leonard Bernstein do?” I've never talked to my dad about that, but I figured I would tell all of you.

He has talked pretty openly about his sobriety problems (and nervous issues) and it seems like when he drank regularly he really went for it and was a mess. He started young. He also mentioned sleeping around a lot during that period and even stealing. He has always come off as a slightly "gay-adjacent" (as someone put it above) smart kid who partied too hard but I don't think he ever really hid his issues.
He had a few bits in his comedy special, "New In Town" where he talked about it. Here's one.
Apparently, like with a lot of people, the pandemic got to Mulaney pretty bad. He's been having problems for a while with being forced into quarantine and not being able to go perform on the standup circuit. It was especially problematic because John was having financial problems even before it happened. With the pandemic cutting back on his work schedule, they went from a one income household (his) to a no income household since Anna doesn't work. Under a lot of stress, not to mention palling around with Pete Davison, he just kind of snapped. The whole "I took the job with Seth Meyers to have a normal routine" shtick is a lie. He needed the cash.
All of this stress just kind of broke him. The pressure got too much and he started lashing out at Anna and they've had a lot of fights. At a certain point, she threatened to divorce him if he didn't get help for his problems, which are largely mental health problems, not so much drug related. He gave in, trying to save his marriage. She has not filed for divorce, yet, but it seems like it may be coming.

R100 It's not like John was ever rolling in the dough. Before all of this, he was a writer (not even head writer) on SNL, had a failed sitcom and did Broadway and a few standup specials. It's not like he's starring in big Hollywood blockbusters or the lead on a successful TV series. He did ok, but not enough to sustain his wife going to "pursue her passion" as a makeup artist in beauty school. As R94 said, she didn't marry Jerry Seinfeld. She needed to pay her dues and maybe that's where part of the tension came from. If she divorces him (which could happen, though I'm not sure if she'll go through with it) her next boyfriend will absolutely be someone with money. She's a JAP first and foremost.

Mulaney could probably easily get a series or even movie roles if he wanted them (even Colin Jost is doing a movie) but the fact that he was sticking to touring and Netflix specials seems to indicate he preferred that lifestyle. Unfortunately the pandemic put an end to that.

Seth's mostly naked appearance was in a commercial for "Short & Curlies pube shampoo."

R188 …Irish bashing…
Colm Tóibín is an excellent Irish novelist (who I consider one of the three best gay novelists alive today).
About ten years ago he acknowledged that his people were infantilised and kept in a state of 'arrested development'.
He said that they were infantilised by the English landlords for a few centuries, the Catholic Church for a millennia and, briefly, by the European Common Market subsidies.
Now it seems the Irish people are currently in the process of shaking off the Catholic Church.
I've spoken to many Irishmen and they acknowledge they've been infantilised by their addiction to alcohol.

Meh - rehab, if done well, can be a great vacation depending on the location.
And the post above about his 'aw shucks I'm from the Midwest' stuff is all fantasy. Both of his parents are attorneys in Chicago. He grew up in a house (very expensive) in Lincoln Park and went to Francis Parker, an expensive elite private school in Chicago. HIs parents had a summer home in Lake Geneva, which has tons of mansions for the upper class of Chicago.
He grew up in one of the wealthiest urban environments in the nation, with access to everything.

One of keys to if John fooled around with guys when he’s drunk is that he admits to being a blackout drunk, who doesn’t remember a thing, and sometimes makes considerable amounts of money. So not only does he fuck guys when drunk, but also escorts and then conveniently forgets all of it. Maybe going back on the bottle was a way to raise funds during his economic downturn and struggles, my money’s on Pete as being his pimp making all these deals and doing it at a high end level since how he’s a celebrity. Besides, Netflix offers all the money upfront, which denies talent royalties and other sweeteners that have historically kept actors afloat for years.

I always have considered Mulaney a cute guy, but in a 1960s Arrow Shirt ad kind of way. IMHO, he has classic features and a killer smile. Just too skinny, but the tailored suits help in that regard. He pinged for me early on, but I have been wrong before. Still, the mannerisms as he stands on stage don't exactly scream overly masculine. If he is indeed in the closet, it's his choice to make about if or when to come out. Whether he does or not, I think he's a brilliant comic and hope he recovers soon.

It happens so often in Hollywood that it's difficult for people not to come to that assumption, especially with how John describes his wife as a "bossy Jew" and how controlling she comes across in interviews. She may not be a bad person, but you can tell she wears the pants in that relationship. Maybe he got fed up with it. Perhaps they can work out their issues, but the relationship always came across as kind of toxic and with a bit of desperation on John's end to want to be married and settle down. It may be time to split. It would be better for the both of them.

I worked in a public space, a corporate gallery, off 5th Ave. that had free open public bathrooms. R336 No, but for someone who has hosted SNL three times, filmed multiple stand up specials and starred on Broadway, you'd think that being relegated to being a staff writer on Seth Meyers would be a big career plunge. That kind of job is for someone looking to make it in the industry, not for someone who already had something going. The only people in the industry who would take that kind of job after having already made a name for themselves is someone who is desperate and needed the quick cash. John needed the money, plain and simple. Hey, it's a lot better than what happened to Geoffrey Owens, but it's still a big demotion, though now that's the least of his problems. I know it might be tacky to speculate on this, but I'm curious as to which rehab facility John checked himself into. I know the Page Six article said it was in Pennsylvania, so I narrowed it down to the most likely ones. The biggest cluster of rehab facilities are in York county, which is about 30 minutes to an hour outside of Philly. There is, surprisingly enough, a Promises (the fake, bullshit celebrity rehab the stars go to) facility in that area. If that's where he's staying, then it's not a serious stint in rehab at all. If it's something more serious like the Bradford or Blueprint facilities, then it means he's taking his health seriously.

No, R349, I am not a frau and I am well aware that gay men can be just as masculine as any other guy. By "vibes" I didn't mean that it had to be stereotypical lisping or anything else. I'm just saying that he doesn't set off gaydar. I'd also read something about him dating some female comedian at some point. If he is gay, it's just interesting. I enjoy him and he is obviously intelligent but I just don't know much about his personal life and seldom read anything about him.
And R353, read any thread about any TV, movie, or Broadway actor and there is ALWAYS someone who will state that any person who is mentioned is gay.

Nonsense. I've read the Theatre Gossip threads for years and years. Matt Morrison was never discussed as gay, quite the opposite in fact. He only became "gay" to Gleeks.

I've been trying to figure out what is so jarring (to me, anyway) about Mulaney's physique in the picture. It's the proportion between his spindly forearms and his elongated wrists/hands.
If I cover his hands, I just see an ordinary guy, albeit a little on the reedy side. Uncover them, and I'm thinking, wow, limb grafting technology has come a long way!
I do hope he gets it back together. I enjoy his work.

All these comments about a JAPy wife - well a couple things:
1) A Jewish girl named Annamarie?? I thought only nuns were named that.
2) and a little more seriously, that kind of behavior is hardly reserved for Jewish girls/wives anymore. Just look at the NYT from the past 20 + years (“until this month, she worked at....”) Unless a woman happens to fall into a dream career that she truly loves and is making tons of money (or unless she’s working class or lower), she’s just biding time until she can find a man to support her. The WASPiest of the WASPs are equally guilty of this.
So enough with the baiting.

Anything but resorting to Seth Meyers.

What's the big deal about working for Seth Meyers? Part of the deal was him appearing in segments, which gives him a public audience during covid—something hard to come by right now—and his past appearances have been well-received since he and Seth are real-life friends and have chemistry. Plus, the show will need talent to redesign its comedy strategy after the current president leaves so it's a compliment that John was asked to contribute. Late night shows have extremely high writer turnaround rates, it would be reasonable for it to be a short-term gig while he has nothing else to do.

Yeah he's a Georgetown graduate, along with Nick Kroll, who definitely comes from money.
I think some people here think that we are exclusively blaming Anna for this, but no one has done that. What has been said is that her not working and going to an expensive school like NYU caused financial problems before the pandemic and the lack of being able to do stand up exacerbated things to the point where John had a breakdown. That's what happened here. It's quite obvious that things are going to have to change if they are going to stay married. One of those things is that is Anna going to have to work.

R403 I don't know him directly, but I heard from someone that he has been paying for her schooling for years because he loves her and "supports her passions" even though they are complete bullshit and are literally not going to go anywhere or amount to anything. He hacked it until the pandemic changed things for him financially and that became one of the things that they got into arguments about. A lot of actors are in this boat. John is just one of the first people where it's going to get publicity in the near future. Within the next year, you're going to start to hear a lot more celebrities acknowledging how the pandemic fucked up their finances, even some names who might shock you.
R404 Because John Mulaney was never rolling in the dough even before the pandemic and you really overestimate how much performers make these days. Hollywood is much stingier than it used to be and streaming services are notorious for stiffing talent unless they are top tier, A-list celebrities. John did ok, but he wasn't making Jerry Seinfeld money, not to mention that he had that long stretch between his failed sitcom and his Netflix deal where he made a lot less money. He supported Anna for as long as he could, but as R405 says, it's time to get a job and pull her weight. She can go back to school later if that's what she wants to do, but for the sake of their marriage and their finances, she has to swallow her pride.

Out of the last 10 winners, only two of them (as far as I can tell) Jacqueline Durran from Anna Karenina and Mark Bridges from Phantom Thread & The Artist had Masters degrees. The rest, like many positions in the arts, got where they are because they worked enough so they got to the point where they were considered experts. It's no different than the idea that you don't need to go to film school to make an academy award winning film. You just need to do the damn thing.
And I know people want to bash his wife but he's an addict. He had issues long before he met her. He will have issues if they split. If he couldn't handle being locked up with her then he should have moved out if he felt his sobriety was threatened. At the end of the day the responsibility he has to himself to stay sobert has to take precedence over whether or not his wife is happy.

r412 living a Manhattan lifestyle with a materialistic wife who doesn't work, then add in John Mulaney's finances that are easily deduced by people who know a thing or two about the business and it's pretty easy to see how he would very clearly be in financial trouble right now since his main source of income was stand up which he hasn't been able to do for months now. He's in some shit at the moment.
by Anonymous | reply 417 | December 23, 2020 4:57 AM |
R416 Not to mention that before pursuing her "costume design" degree, she got a Bachelors in a totally unrelated field, basic writing and psychology. She's just going to school for the sake of going to school. It is not a career focused move, which is what smart people do who want to make something of themselves. For her, it was just about "pursuing her passions," but the time for that is over.
Let's say John decides to agree to a divorce and he works to stay sober and get back on his feet. What is Anna going to do without him? Either she'll have to find another guy to fit the bill for her "business" or [bold] gasp [/bold] she's going to have to find a real job and work for a living. So even if they split, this is something she's going to have to face head on. She's not a Bloomberg or a Gates or a Bezos or from old money like the Rockefeller's. She can't finance her "art" on her own. She better have a backup plan or she's totally screwed.

This thread is gold. Complete with accurate information being delivered and explained in a logical manner being emotionally argued with by Annamarie fans. How does this woman have fans? If she actually wanted to be a writer and had any bit of talent she could easily get a staff writing job on some show or get a screenplay noticed simply because she is married to John Mulany. Like Kumail and his wife. She has not done this and has, as others have pointed out, pursued degrees that don’t really go together and hopped from passion to passion.
I don’t care what this woman does with her life. But I do know about the comedy world. John Mulany cannot afford to support this woman’s endeavors indefinitely, especially right now. Even though, he is not being paid like a beginning writer at Late Night, people have guarantees in their contracts and with unions, Mulany didn’t go back to the bottom rung (he was never really there with Kroll in his corner anyway) and he definitely needed the steady income and to get out of the house. This is not a step down, more sideways.
He is also surely paying a publicist 10k + a month to get his sickly face out there and score Architechtural digest articles for his wife. This is how the world works. Believe it or not. This is what is happening. People here get it, like Jeselnik. I love you bitches!!!!

John is a comedian with a past of addiction issues. Sometimes people, especially comedian types, get bored. Day-to-day can be overwhelming and boring for hyper-observant types. Tiresome. The basic bitches with their fake gossip always claim that if you disagree or point out their errors, you're just a fan whose feelings are hurt.
I don't know jack shit about Annamarie, but I do watch Mulaney's standup, and I remembered him saying something about her working, so when the person (you, probably) claimed to know that the real problem was she was a greedy bitch who refused to work, I looked it up. You were wrong. Later, you were wrong about her degrees and the classes she's in right now. I didn't know anything about this lady's education because I was a fan, I knew it because I looked it up.

R416, R410, R413, I checked the numbers on Oscars for costume design, and of all the Best Costume Oscars from 2010 to 2019:
5 went to designers with grad degrees in costume design 3 went to designers without grad degrees (and all of these are older than 60 years or older) 2 could not determine is degree in costume design is undergrad or grad.
Also, usually the execution of the designs are done by either MFA or people who began working in clothing construction at a very young age. (This is anecdotal, but pretty overwhelmingly true.)

When Jimmy Kimmel says that John Mulaney is one of the few people to have had a good 2020, you can see acknowledgment that nothing could be further from the truth wash over Mulaney's face.
He even says that his only paying gig since the pandemic is hosting SNL. And SNL doesn't pay celebs much to host -- it is considered an honor to be asked.
What it comes down to is that Anna is just going to school for the sake of it, not with any career path in mind. As R446 and others have said, she doesn't have to even take some shitty job to makes end meet. She could utilize the almost two years of "costume design" education she got at NYU and get a job on some film set doing that. John has the connections to make that happen for her, not to mention how everyone is going to be like "poor Anna" and employ her on the pity party alone. She literally has no excuse not to work, so if she continues to refuse to get gainful employment, it just shows what kind of cunt she is. Obviously, she's not responsible for John relapsing, but he's not responsible for financing her bullshit "business" endeavors and useless academic pursuits either.

by Anonymous | reply 458 | December 23, 2020 4:35 PM |
I remember watching the Seth Meyers interview at R443 and sensing darkness from Mulaney, mainly due to the questions he was asking Seth. They were personal and honest... like he'd been contemplating his time in the industry as well as the nature of his relationships. The sunglasses added this cold distance to his demeanor as well. He seemed rather sad and over it.
Then it was announced that he'd be writing for Seth's show, which everyone looked at as a downgrade career-wise on various message boards, but people defended the decision saying a job's a job, which is true. Then someone in another thread mentioned the wife changing her surname, then deleting her IG, and then two days later the rehab news breaks.
I feel bad for him, but he's got all the resources he needs to pull through this, and has so much goodwill within the industry. He'll have tons of material for his next act.
I couldn't care less about the wife.

I’ve always found Mulaney somewhat off putting for some reason— the same way I find Birbiglia off putting.
It’s that uptight, Catholic closet case with a completely useless wife thing. It’s so regressive. It’s like they are living in the 1950s and feel the need to keep up appearances and have a non working wife as a status symbol.
It requires a certain amount of narcissism to be a closet case. Like, who the fuck cares if you are gay or not?
by Anonymous | reply 460 | December 23, 2020 4:47 PM |
R458 No jealously here. I just don't get the attraction from a personality perspective. She's not ugly, but he's not overly handsome himself. Looks like, they fit each other. Personality wise, she seems to be very bossy and treats him like shit. Doesn't seem like a healthy marriage. Maybe they will work out their problems, but divorce wouldn't be the worst thing either.

by Anonymous | reply 466 | December 23, 2020 5:09 PM |
Mulaney’s act has lots of references to child endangerment. I wonder if there’s a story there.
He comes off hyper controlled and uptight— the way an abuse survivor might. Abuse / molestation would also explain a dramatic change in his personality around age 12 (which he describes in his act.)
Being raised in all Catholic institutions in the 80s and with parents who seem aggressively clueless if not sociopathic themselves, it’s certainly possible.
by Anonymous | reply 467 | December 23, 2020 5:12 PM |
I don't think he comes off as uptight at all. He turns little complaints about society into big deals in his standup material, which might imply uptightness, but that's par for the course for observational comedy. Doesn't mean a thing about him personally. I would imagine that because he was such a mess for so long and because he worked successfully in the chaotic SNL environment that he's actually rather open-minded.
by Anonymous | reply 468 | December 23, 2020 5:17 PM |
He was an alterboy, so he was a prime target for molestation. That may also explain why he may have opted for a heterosexual life despite gay inclinations.
by Anonymous | reply 469 | December 23, 2020 5:18 PM |
There are lots of people here drawing conclusions about him, his parents, and his wife from his standup which would be misleading at best. It's comedic material, so it's always exaggerated and tweaked to make a good story. I've heard a few comedians say that their wives/kids/etc hate when they joke about them because it gives the public such a cartoonish view.

“Irish curse”? Cocaine is the spoiled trust fund kid’s curse. It’s typical for rich kids to develop serious addiction problems into adulthood. That’s why Portland Oregon voted to decriminalize cocaine possession. That town is full of wealthy people who don’t want to see their brats go to jail.

On his dime. No one said she shouldn't get a graduate degree if she's the one paying the bill, but the point is she's not and that's where people are critical. Not to mention that her educational pursuits are not about advancing her career, otherwise she would have gone on a stable academic trajectory that would lead to gainful employment in the future. To hop from creative writing and psychology to costume design is just the outward sign of a woman going to college for the sake of going to college. It's a big waste of money, especially at an expensive school like NYU which charges $50,000 a year for tuition. John shouldn't have ever forked over that kind of money for a wasteful degree like that, but he most certainly can't and shouldn't be doing it now. If he goes back to doing it again after cleaning himself up and getting back to work, then he's a big fucking idiot and will get himself into more financial trouble again in the future.

Tendler went to some pricey schools before dating Mulaney so I don't think it's a given that he's paying for her education right now. I think they both come from enough money that tuition isn't going to be a life-ending ordeal that will force him to snort up all the white powder in a tri-state area.
Also a lot of her work like her books and blog tutorials are under her maiden name, so now I wonder if she really did change her IG name at all. This happens on gossip topics all the time now, people saying someone unfollowed or changed a name or whatever, and you can't actually tell if that happened or not.

I understand the concept of exaggerating reality for comic effect, but he talks about her “toughness” so much, in every routine, that there just be truth to it. He deserves someone who adores him. He’s hugely talented and has done so well for himself. He’s a catch, warts and all. He needs a partner who has his back. The man works his ass off.

It used to be that a highly successful wife was the ultimate status symbol for successful men.
When did successful men start going for these do-nothing types? Or is it just a Catholic thing?
I would think if the couple doesn’t want kids, that would make it difficult for the wife to justify not working.
Then you have the Birbiglia types. He apparently can’t walk out his front door without fucking up somehow and his wife is equally idiotic. She thought it completely unreasonable to have to show a valid id to fly after 9/11. Never mind that she was driving without a license. He always struck me as very nice and friendly. I'm really not shocked he has personal problems and an issue with addiction. Many comics are sad and depressed people who self-medicare. And coming from a rich background doesn't make you any less depressed. At least he is actually seeking help and has the money and resources to do so.
It's standup. It may represent a version of reality. It may have never happened in any way. It's a comedy act. Sorry I have to keep reminding people about this.
Actually that depends on what kind of a comic John is. Some comics find a way to convey stories about things that actually happened in a way that's humorous without actually exaggerating what they're saying. You don't quite know how he rolls.
What we do know is that he keeps repeating stories that all seem to follow the same patterns. He also has spoken about incidents from his act in interviews, off the stage, confirming in a way that the events happened as he says they did. The story about him stealing something from a person's place and forgetting that he did because he was so drunk wasn't an on stage bit. He also doesn't shy away from doing non-traditional speaking engagements where he's not expected to be funny, he is just clearly speaking from his own experience.
So there's a lot more evidence pointing towards him not exaggerating his stories than there is towards him doing so.

He describes their relationship in this bit. It seems like he's saying he needs her guidance but he also says she's not bossy. There seems to be a co-dependency there. (And while normally I wouldn't speculate about these things it's fucking Datalounge. It's a gossip board. It's what we do and have for decades!)

I have to laugh at someone complaining about the wife's apparent insensitivity over Mulaney's lack of teen appeal next to Chalamet. Apart from the fact that it was a joke and it may not be true, if it IS true, I should hope she did disabuse him of the notion that he was every little hungry schoolgirl's pride and joy.

You guys do know how standup works, right? John's wife may have said at one time that Timmy Shalamar is hot and then John built a whole bit around it. It doesn't mean the way he told it in his act is the truth. You know, it could have been his friend's wife who said it or something that he completely made up.
It doesn't mean the way he told it in his act is the truth.
What he said was that she made a joke about his height and the rest of his bit was all him exaggerating about her being in love with him. He even points out the next day he came up with a response to it and she had no clue what he was talking about. He's very particular with his words when saying if something happened vs when he's just giving an example that never happened. Whatever gets you through the night!
For the record his mom talked about the Bill Clinton story and said that it was accurate. She also says that 95% of his act is true which I'm guessing is just the stuff about their family that she can verify and was there for. (And you can chalk that last bit possibly up to him exaggerating, changing things because he has to or her not remembering it.) She said he never crosses the line although he didn't ask her permission to talk about her.

R526 It isn't just from the stand up that I've noticed this tension. When John did Comedians in Cars with Seinfeld, there was a scene where Jerry was pressuring him into buying a rug, but he resisted because he knew Anna wouldn't like it. In the last scene of the episode, they are in John's apartment and she gives him a glaring look when she asks [italic] "You both like this one?" [/italic] While obviously Anna was restraining herself, seeing as they were being filmed, you could just tell how pissed she was and how nervous John was in that moment. This was their on camera persona. Imagine the conversation that must have transpired when the crew and Jerry went home for the day.
It's not just a standup bit where he calls her a "bossy little Jew." She really is very controlling and obviously has him enraptured enough to pay for her schooling for so long. It's not a healthy relationship, no matter how much the frau fans try to spin it otherwise. However, John genuinely loves her or he wouldn't have gone to rehab to clean up his act or stayed with her for as long as he has. Whether this saves their marriage is something I can't say for certain, but it really will depend on whether the rehab program works and whether they can change their relationship to something that is emotionally and financially healthier for the both of them. If they don't come out of this with a different dynamic, then it won't last and will end in divorce.

It's crazy to me how fast this thread filled up. It's only been two days and we're almost at 600 posts already. I guess it really is true that John is a DL Favorite. He was pushing it when he criticized Biden right before the election, causing some of the elder gays here to clutch their pearls, but this has seemingly brought him some sympathy and also some scorn for his wife (LOL). If he comes out of this ok, I think he'll make a comeback. If he came out of the closet, it would probably break the DL. Not saying he is gay or that he will come out, but if he is and did, it would be one of the most popular threads in our sites history by far, if this thread is any indication.

As has been explained, her studies weren't going to lead to a profitable career track. She was a celebrity wife who took classes that she fancied, not with any gainful employment in mind.

That's an outdated concept, but of course some men like having trophy wives. Mulaney couldn't afford it. Annamarie was spending spending spending and harping at him all the time - as he himself has talked about - it seems she either thought he was going to have Seinfeld money in a relatively short time or already had enough to support her like a Manhattan Princess. Of course it's Mulaney's fault for not putting the kibosh on this long ago. Annamarie definitely overestimated Mulaney's worth, and it came crashing down. This is a very, very common story in these circles and things get very ugly when reality sets in. She basically wanted to be Jessica Seinfeld but Mulaney is nowhere near that income bracket.

So before we get to a part two, what does everyone think is going to happen after John leaves rehab?
The person I was speaking to has no idea what's going to happen next, except that he hopes the time away will give John space to think things through. He's going to need to make some major changes in his life, starting with sorting out his finances. That means he'll probably go back to Seth Meyers' show for the time being and maybe even try to push for something more regular, like a talk show.
I remember a couple of years ago, as I mentioned in the Gossip part 3 thread, that I had heard John was a top contender to fill in Seth Meyers' spot on Late Night if Jimmy Fallon was forced out of the Tonight Show during his own crisis with drinking. After this, though, I really don't think NBC is going to consider him again, unless they can get assurances that John will stay clean and not cause another headache for the network.
Another option is trying to make that Sack Lunch Bunch special into a regular series, but Comedy Central is mostly ditching live action now and focusing on animation, since South Park is [italic] still [/italic] their big money maker, especially after Tosh left. If he can find a way to incorporate more animation into his show, he might be able to do this, especially if his agent pushes hard enough. I thought the Netflix special was pretty good and I'm sure people would watch it, especially with the intrigue of John coming out of rehab.
As for the wife, I have no clue what he's going to do, but I feel like Anna will hold off on divorcing until John gets back on his feet. As I said before, she'd be making a huge mistake to do it now for financial reasons. Plus, she'd look horrible in the eyes of the press and with his fans to just abandon and leave him at his lowest point. So I don't expect any moves being made now. If there is a divorce, it won't happen until later next year.

I think John is going to star in The John Mulaney story, Joan Rivers style. No comment on whether AnnaMarie will pull a Melissa Rivers.

by Anonymous | reply 573 | December 24, 2020 7:35 AM |
Is there any chance that John is faking it all in a desperate attempt to get away from the shrewish cunt wife and have some peace and quiet? As someone above mention he’s going for 60 days not the standard 28 and I’m sure Christmas was always an extra stressful time as he wanted to celebrate the holiday and she’d be berating him and putting Hanukkah front and center. She probably insisted in incorporating her lampshades into the Christmas decorations as well, and that alone could really break a person.

I don’t know why, but every time I see this thread title I think of the poem by Frank O’Hara “Lana Turner has Collapsed!” The story goes Frank was rushing to Staten Island, of all places, when he caught the title on the cover of a tabloid about Turner’s unfortunate incident. He wrote the poem on the ferry and blew away the other poet presenting that day because he had just created one of his greatest poems in the time it took him to commute there.
I hope one of our great gayling poets to be opened DL on their phone, saw this and it has inspired them too to write a poem. Until then it’s easy enough to just swap out the the titles and it works well, as I recall it was snowing, raining maybe hailing when I first heard the news of John...

If Mulaney is on the staff and the publicist is getting paid anyway by the show to get it positive press, put him or her to work protecting Mulaney.

Dont know if his wife is a little princess or not, but as somebody who lived in both Chicago and NewYork City, you can be a Lincoln Park social climber (its not like they lived in highland park or winnetka where the athletes, neurosurgeons and hedge funders live) and still feel ridiculously wealthy living within your means in Chicago. If he lived the same lifestyle in NYC, in the West Village where he reportedly lives, he can bankrupt himself on his own without his wife’s help. Add on a coke habit, with no steady paycheck, its not hard to understand how anybody would think he is struggling.
