The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, FBI Child Abduction Rapid Deployment, and Colorado Springs Police Department conducted a statewide search for the boy, using search and rescue canines and aerial drone footage.
Unfortunately, Gannon’s remains were found in a fetal position inside a suitcase under a bridge in northwestern Florida on March 20, 2020.
Letecia Stauch, Gannon’s stepmother, was accused of murdering the 11-year-old boy. The autopsy revealed that he had suffered 18 stab wounds to his stomach, back, and head, as well as defensive wounds to his hands.
The Fourth Judicial District Attorney stated that the stepmother hit Gannon with a heavy object on the head and then shot him three times with a handgun.
She was taken into custody in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, in March 2022, and charged with child abuse leading to death and first-degree murder of a child under the age of 12, as well as tampering with physical evidence.
She remained in custody without bond in South Carolina until she was extradited to Colorado Springs.

In addition to the charges of child abuse resulting in death, first-degree murder, and tampering with a deceased human being, Letecia Stauch is facing several other charges.
These include seven counts of a crime of violence for using a weapon, one count of a crime of violence leading to severe bodily injury or death, and tampering with physical evidence.
Letecia Stauch pleaded not guilty to all charges, claiming insanity in the murder of Gannon Stauch. The trial is expected to last at least six weeks.
