According to Robert Contee III, chief of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, people were outside the Stewart Funeral Home in the northwest section of the city when gunfire erupted at about 12:17 p.m. EDT, The Washington Post reported.

Contee said it appeared that several people were targeted after the funeral for 24-year-old Stephon Carroll, according to WRC-TV. Police are not sure what the motive might have been for the shooting.

Several people were shot, one fatally, Tuesday afternoon outside a funeral home in Northeast Washington, according to D.C. police.

Carroll died during the early hours of March 31 when he was fatally shot, the Post reported.

“It’s unfortunate that someone would be so brazen to do such an act, let alone at a funeral,” Contee told reporters at the scene. “How low can you be of a human being to target other people at a funeral?”

A D.C. police officer who had been requested for the service reported the gunfire, WTTG-TV reported. The department routinely offers its services to the families of homicide victims, according to the television station.

The man who was killed Tuesday has not been identified, the Post reported. Police said a man and two women, who were injured in the shooting, suffered serious injuries but they were not considered to be life-threatening.

“At this point, it appears that several of the people who were in the block were specifically targeted,” Contee told reporters. “We’re unsure why that is, and more or less, why they were targeted at a funeral.”

Police are still attempting to identify a suspect or suspects, the Post reported. An investigation is ongoing.
